DESCRIPTION:with Kate Stashko\nThe 15th edition of Now Hear This kicks off with an exciting collaboration between two of Edmonton’s leading experimental artists: Pigeon Breeders (Myles Bartel and Will Scott) and dance artist Kate Stashko. Their new work\, Expressions\, is a dynamic structured improvisation that transforms Stashko’s dance into a living expression pedal\, guiding Pigeon Breeders—armed with a fascinating array of found objects and instruments—through her captivating movement language. The result is an electrifying journey that unfolds across the performance space\, blurring the lines between sound and motion. \nDetails HERE \n

SUMMARY:St.Arnaud
DESCRIPTION:St.Arnaud is the music of Ian (St.Arnaud)\, a project that balances buoyant\, wry storytelling with roots and early indie influences\, all wrapped in lively\, danceable arrangements. Often described as “the goofy side of self-serious indie rock.” The collection is to be packaged into three deluxe singles\, and then released as a self-titled album on Cordova Bay Records. Each of these deluxe singles is a motley crew of songs\, packaged more around a mode of production than a particular genre or feeling. Steeped in the raucous and fun-loving 70s’ folkers and power poppers like Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers\, the result is a larger and livelier interpretation that retains Ian’s penchant for pop hooks and sardonic lyrics. \nThe album and its preceding EPs are a range of material including rock songs\, more folk-oriented singer-songwriter songs\, danceable rock songs\, and emotional ballads. St.Arnaud has played with Basia Bulat\, Reuben and the Dark\, and Lucy Rose among countless others and has performed at stages across the world including The Great Escape\, Reeperbahn\, New Colossus Festival\, FOCUS Wales\, and Tallinn Music Week. St.Arnaud has been featured on Exclaim!\, Folk Radio UK\, Indie 88\, CKUA\, and the CBC Radio 3 top 10.

SUMMARY:Ignite
DESCRIPTION:with the Corps and Straightline \nThe spirited California-based five piece has waved a blindingly brilliant hardcore torch for over 25 years. IGNITE’s latest and self-titled album is the moment where they reconcile themselves with their history. “It never felt like a struggle or an effort\,” says guitarist Kevin Killkenny “It felt like the five of us pulling in the same direction.” The album not only encapsulates their determination to redefine themselves but also stands as one of the strongest efforts to date. It’s IGNITE firing on all cylinders. Melodic\, political\, poignant and most importantly – driven. “The opening track ‘Anti-Complicity-Anthem’ is a mantra for me\,” says Nik Hill (guitars). “It’s about having a voice in the face of the trials and tribulations we all face working through the shame\, the indignity and the loss of life that have become part of our experience as individuals and as a country.” At the center of it all is the new vocalist Eli Santana\, an unexpected choice for the band\, but a perfect example of IGNITE’s willingness to step beyond expectations. “It’s a new chapter for IGNITE\,” says Brett Rasmussen (bass). “But there’s a lot of looking back to some of our earliest records like ‘Call on My Brothers’ and having the same feeling writing these songs. This is what we love doing – as it was in 1993 and as it is now.”

SUMMARY:Afrorack (Uganda)
DESCRIPTION:with Kaunsel & Mr.Kou \n\n\nThe Afrorack returns! Merging polyrhythmic structures inherent in African music with elements of acid\, techno & ambient\, 2nd time in YEG! \n\n\n\n\nOKRA presents \nAfrorack \nBrian Bamanya\, known professionally as Afrorack\, is a Ugandan multidisciplinary artist\, engineer\, and musician who has pioneered Africa’s first DIY modular synthesizer. Driven by a passion for electronics and a desire to make modular synthesis accessible in Uganda\, Bamanya constructed his own synthesizer using locally sourced components and self-taught engineering skills. This innovative instrument\, also named “The Afrorack\,” serves as both his artistic moniker and a symbol of his commitment to blending technology with African musical traditions. He has appeared at several international festivals which include Sonar\, Rewire\, Elevate\, Dakar Art Biennale and CTM among others. In May 2022\, Afrorack released his self-titled debut album\, The Afrorack\, through the Ugandan label Hakuna Kulala. The album showcases his unique approach to electronic music\, merging polyrhythmic structures inherent in African music with elements of acid\, techno\, and ambient sounds. Tracks like “African Drum Machine” exemplify his use of Euclidean rhythm sequencing to create complex\, algorithmic patterns that echo traditional East African rhythms. The album was received with popular acclaim making it to several music writers’ best albums of 2022 including The Wire Magazine top 50 albums of 2022\, The Quietus best of 2022 and He has also been featured on the BBC world service radio. Afrorack’s innovative work continues to inspire a new generation of musicians and technologists\, bridging the gap between traditional African music and contemporary electronic soundscapes.

A quick look at Canada’s music scene from 1971 until 1976 confirms The Stampeders were truly the country’s international musical ambassadors\, touring more extensively in Canada and overseas than any other Canadian group during that time. In 1977 the trio: Rich Dodson (lead guitar)\, Kim Berly (drums) and Ronnie King (bass) parted company but reunited\, fittingly at the Calgary Stampede\, 15 years later in 1992. Since then they’ve been recognized by SOCAN for their Lifetime Achievement\, been inducted into the SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame on five occasions and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for their 1971 seminal hit Sweet City Woman. \nIn March 2024\, just before the Ontario leg of this tour\, Ronnie King passed away. In the final days\, while in  palliative care\, he insisted that his band mates carry on.  Dave  Chabot\, renowned bassist and long time friend of the band\, who was already scheduled to be on the tour to sit in for Ronnie as needed\, was the obvious choice.  Still\, Ronnie remains a presence at every show\, as Rich and Kim share stories from 50 plus years on the road and pay tribute with a retrospective video. \nThe enduring musical legacy of The Stampeders  … One More Time … ‘better catch a noon train\, better get there for a rock ‘n’ rolling good time!’

SUMMARY:Wintersleep
DESCRIPTION:The average Canadian carries around with them in their head a vision of spaciousness.” So theorized Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer\, describing a so-called ‘Canadian sound.’ For Schafer and many others\, it was a sound defined by space\, by the land and our distance from and proximity to it. For Harry Freedman\, it was “gaunt” and “lonely.” Elaine Keillor called it “immense\, empty\, mysterious\, harsh\, indifferent\, producing a response of awe mingled with terror and an intense sense of spiritual loneliness.” \nOn Wintersleep’s seventh full-length record\, In the Land Of\, this geography is both real and imagined. It is understood that our surroundings are not\, in fact\, essential or concrete elements they’re constructed in relation to us\, the inhabitants. Our identities\, too\, are constructed in relation to the land. The land\, both physical and figurative\, changes\, and so do we. Familiar land. Foreign land. Inhospitable land. Unceded land. Stolen land. Dead land.
